About Jazz Academy

Jazz Academy is an out-of-school community music program that invites young musicians from all across the Chicago metropolitan area and beyond to participate in a two week intensive summer camp and/or a Saturday program during the school year. The Jazz Academy is an inclusive program where students are welcomed at any level and teachers work to meet their individual needs.

With its unique ‘third stream’ approach in combining jazz and classical genres, Jazz Academy students receive well-rounded music education that teaches theory, technique, and aesthetic creativity in both genres, with a focus on improvisation and self-expression.

"My boys were exposed to so much more than they are in regular school band. Jazz Academy changed their outlook on music for the best."

COVID-19 Update

**In response to the developments pertaining to the COVID-19 virus and its impact on our students, SATURDAY JAZZ ACADEMY IS GOING VIRTUAL**

Beginning Saturday, March 21, we will be moving Jazz Academy into the virtual realm! While we look forward to the time that we can all be together in person again, we believe that we can do a lot of great things through this new format in the meantime.

We will center our learning around the app "Band," and will utilize one of the variety of video calling apps available for live instruction -- FaceTime, Skype, Zoom, Google Hangouts.

Ensemble with Dr. Griffin: Both ensembles will receive lesson materials, practice guides, and other related learning materials through the Band app each Saturday along with assigned musical work to complete. Students will receive individualized feedback from Dr. Griffin on their work each week to help them continue to progress. This portion of Jazz Academy will be entirely on the Band app and will not feature a live streaming component.

Masterclasses: All masterclasses will now take on a more one-on-one format. Students will be able to sign up for a private lesson with their masterclass teacher, to be conducted via live video chat, during the normal Jazz Academy hours of instruction. Additionally, teachers will be working to create supplemental materials for their class that will be made available through the Band app.

As we go, we will continue to refine our process so that we are giving the best quality content we can provide for our young musicians. Please contact Program Manager, Jordan Mandela at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with any questions!

CJP Youth Ensemble

CJP Youth Ensemble

Rehearsing on Saturdays and in the Summer as part of the Jazz Academy, the CJP Youth Ensemble mirrors the CJP professional orchestra (combining jazz and string ensembles). The CJP Youth Ensemble has participated in community performances, including a “curtain rousing set” (Chicago Tribune) opening for the professional orchestra at its most recent concert in Millennium Park (August 2017). In addition, CJP Youth Ensemble members have had opportunities to perform as part of the professional orchestra.
