About Jazz Academy

Jazz Academy is an out-of-school community music program that invites young musicians from all across the Chicago metropolitan area and beyond to participate in a two week intensive summer camp and/or a Saturday program during the school year. The Jazz Academy is an inclusive program where students are welcomed at any level and teachers work to meet their individual needs.

With its unique ‘third stream’ approach in combining jazz and classical genres, Jazz Academy students receive well-rounded music education that teaches theory, technique, and aesthetic creativity in both genres, with a focus on improvisation and self-expression.

"My boys were exposed to so much more than they are in regular school band. Jazz Academy changed their outlook on music for the best."

NEW Jazz Academy Programs coming January 2021

International Masters of Improvisation Workshop
In keeping with the year-long theme of improvisation, and building upon the interests shared by the students at our Virtual Jazz Camp this summer, we are launching a series of interactive workshops with master improvisors in Latin Jazz as part of our Saturday Jazz Academy. We will be inviting youth from Mexico, Puerto Rico and Panama to participate with our students, providing a unique opportunity to bring young jazz students together from the Latin diaspora to work with top artists in the Latin Jazz field, including Miguel Zenon and John Santos.

Jazz Academy Student Leadership Council
Jazz Academy Student Leadership Council is a leadership development and mentorship program for students, ages 14-18 who are enrolled in CJP’s Jazz Academy program. Participants will meet each month with members of the CJP staff to help us develop exciting and youth-inspired programs for the Jazz Academy. Participants will be matched with veteran musician mentors including saxophonists Ari Brown and Mwata Bowden, CJP drummer Ernie Adams, CJP concertmaster Zara Zaharieva and Jazz Academy alumnus Kevin King.

Saturday Academy 2.0 - Virtual Music. Real Results

This year’s Saturday Jazz Academy will be entirely virtual, and will build on the model of our hugely successful and popular Summer Jazz Academy - Virtual Edition.  Make music, friends, and fun, all from the comfort of your own home, as you participate in instrument technique classes and virtual ensembles and work on classic jazz and big band tunes, as well as original Third Stream music by CJP Artistic Director Orbert Davis.

You asked and we listened — Saturday Jazz Academy will now feature a dedicated improvisation class in which students of all levels will learn to improvise without fear, and will build a musical vocabulary that will take their soloing to the next level!

CJP Youth Ensemble

CJP Youth Ensemble

Rehearsing on Saturdays and in the Summer as part of the Jazz Academy, the CJP Youth Ensemble mirrors the CJP professional orchestra (combining jazz and string ensembles). The CJP Youth Ensemble has participated in community performances, including a “curtain rousing set” (Chicago Tribune) opening for the professional orchestra at its most recent concert in Millennium Park (August 2017). In addition, CJP Youth Ensemble members have had opportunities to perform as part of the professional orchestra.
