Chicago Immigrant Stories II

January - July 2019

“Chicago Immigrant Stories II” – This second year of “Chicago Immigrant Stories” (CIS) will bring CJP’s artistry of cross-genre collaborations to meld with the musical culture of some of Chicago’s most diverse immigrant communities and musicians.

January 24 - CIS: Greektown
will feature Greek saxophonist and composer Athanasios Zervas
February 21 - CIS: Pilsen will feature Juan Dies and Victor Pichardo of Grammy-nominated folk ensemble Sones de Mexico
July 22 -
CIS II: Finale at 6:30pm, Millennium Park, will feature all the collaborating performers with CJP’s 60-member orchestra, conducted by Orbert Davis

The common thread through both projects will include CJP orchestra members Leandro Lopez Varady (pianist from Argentina) and Zara Zaharieva (violinist from Bulgaria). From January to February, small group workshop performances will take place throughout the city’s cultural neighborhoods. The work will culminate with the world premiere by lead composer Orbert Davis of a full orchestra work formed out of this musical melting pot.  The music will be the soundtrack to resonate across all Chicago citizens as they comprehend what it means to be 'American'.

Chicago Tribune - January 15, 2019
"In what feels like a gesture of defiance amid the current acrimony over Trump’s proposed southern border wall, Davis and friends have decided to create a follow-up edition of “Chicago Immigrant Stories.” This time, Davis will collaborate with Greek musicians and others at the National Hellenic Museum, in Greektown, on Jan. 24; and with Mexican musicians and others at the National Museum of Mexican Art, in Pilsen, on Feb. 21." -Howard Reich
