ORBERT DAVIS - ARTISTIC DIRECTOR.
The Chicago Tribune's "1995 Arts People of the Year" and one of seven “Chicagoans of the Year for 2002”, Emmy-Award winner Orbert Davis is one of Chicago’s busiestand most sought after jazz artists. Davis has a bachelor's degree from DePaul University and a Masters of Music in Jazz Pedagogy from Northwestern University. In addition to being a professional jazz musician, performer, and composer, he is a clinician and teacher, having taught music theory, jazz history, jazz improvisation and trumpet performance at Columbia College for 14 years, and was the Associate Professor of Jazz History at University of IL at Chicago for six years. In addition to having co-founded Discover Music: Discover Life, Inc. in 1999, he is the Founding and Artistic Director for the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic.
DR. ROOSEVELT GRIFFIN - ENSEMBLE DIRECTOR
Golden Apple Award winner Roosevelt Griffin is is District Band Director for Harvey School District 152, the school and community from which he was raised. The Harvey Band Program has received great honors, ratings and accolades from all around the country, with performance invitations from the Chicago Jazz Festival, Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, and Jazz Education Network. He attended Northern Illinois University where he received his Illinois Teaching Certificate in Instrumental Music and a B.A. in Music Performance. He has been teaching for the CJP Jazz Academy since its inception in 2008. Most recently he received his doctorate in education from Argosy University.
PHYLLIS SANDERS - STRINGS DIRECTOR.
Phyllis has been with Chicago Jazz Philharmonic, both as a performer and teacher, since it’s inception. She has a BA in Music Education from the Chicago College of Performing Arts Music Conservatory (Roosevelt University) and an MA in Arts Management from Columbia College. She plays in the 1st violin section of the CJP Orchestra and also plays regularly with the Chicago Sinfonietta. Sanders is a member of the CJP Jazz Academy Faculty and she helped to launch CJP’s strings program McDowell, Linne, Hampton, and Higgins Elementary schools, where she continues to teach.
STEWART MILLER - RHYTHM SECTION MASTER.
Stewart Miller (bass) is a native of Louisville, KY, a graduate of music programs at the University of Kentucky and Northern Illinois University, and a regular in jazz clubs, recording studios, and festivals in and around Chicago. After two years of touring with the Glenn Miller Orchestra in the early 1980s Stewart worked in a wide variety of musical settings in the Louisville-Lexington-Cincinnati area and eventually came to Chicago in 1987. He is a member of the ground-breaking Chicago Jazz Philharmonic, an Instructor of Jazz Bass at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and can be heard on recent recordings by Orbert Davis, Russ Phillips, Bobby Schiff, Judy Roberts, and on Delmark Records 2004 release Up Jumped Spring by legendary trombonist Curtis Fuller.
HENRY SALGADO - BRASS MASTER.
Trombonist Henry Salgado established himself on the Chicago scene while working on his Jazz Studies degree at Depaul University. He began subbing in the pit orchestras of the Goodman Theatre, Marriott Lincolnshire and the Drury Lane Oakbrook. Salgado has also performed with many top entertainers including Josh Groban, Aretha Franklin, Frankie Valli, Kurt Elling, Johnny Mathis, Mel Torme, Rita Moreno, Della Reese and the Doc Severinsen Orchestra. As a studio musician Henry has recorded over 100 Radio & TV commercials and has playing credits on several original movie soundtracks. Henry Salgado is currently a member of the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic Orchestra.
ARTIE BLACK - WOODWIND MASTER.
Artie Black is a saxophonist, composer, and educator based in Chicago. Originally from Butler, Pennsylvania, he moved to Chicago in 2012, where he quickly established himself as an important part of the creative music scene. After graduating from Messiah College with a degree in music education, Artie continued his studies at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, earning a Master's degree in Jazz Studies in 2012. At Indiana, Artie studied saxophone with Tom Walsh and worked as an Associate Instructor with legendary jazz educator David Baker. In addition to his passion for performance, Artie is fascinated by the learning and teaching process. He maintains a busy schedule of private saxophone instruction, and also joined the faculty of Wheaton College as an adjunct professor in Spring 2014. His goal as a teacher is to inspire his students to find joy through learning for themselves.
ERENDIRA IZGUERRA - LEVEL I STRINGS.
Erendira has been a member of the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic for 4 years as a violinist and baritone saxophone player. Last summer she became a member of the Jazz Academy teaching faculty as a beginning violin instructor and now teaches the CJP Strings Alive program at Village Leadership Academy. Erendira is working on her Bachelors of Music – Violin Performance degree from University of Illinois – Chicago. She enjoys playing classical, jazz and mariachi music throughout the city.

Starred Saturdays are extended sessions - 1:30-4:30pm. Extended sessions will include a guest artist presentation, music elective, or workshop. All other Saturdays run 1:30-3:30pm.
