Scenes From Life: Cuba!

Thirty-seven student musicians from Cuba’s national conservatory of the arts, the Universidad de las Artes (ISA), traveled to Chicago as guests of Chicago Jazz Philharmonic (CJP) for a week-long cultural exchange that culminated with a landmark performance with CJP at the Auditorium Theatre. This collaboration with ISA began with Orbert's visit to Cuba as part of the Havana International Jazz Festival in December 2014. Orbert and members of CJP were rehearsing with the students at ISA during President Obama's historic announcement of the normalization of diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Cuba, thrusting Davis and company into the international spotlight on "60 Minutes."

SCENES FROM LIFE: CULTURAL DIPLOMACY TOUR

During their stay in Chicago, the students of ISA, now ‘ambassadors’ to the United States, were the focus of cross-cultural forums at the University of Chicago, Chicago State, and Northwestern Universities. They visited the Art Institute, Navy Pier, Millenium Park and Skydeck Chicago at Willis Tower. Orbert and select students were featured on multiple radio and TV news outlets including iHeartMedia, WVON, WGN-TV, CBS2 and ABC7. The "Scenes From Life: Cuba!" concert was recorded live for a holiday airings on SiriusXM Real Jazz.

Orbert Davis appeared on FOX NEWS CHICAGO Nov. 3, 2015.

CJP will continue its collaboration with ISA administrators and students in the future, as we have been informed that ISA has declared November 13th ‘Jazz Day’ at the university!
